About the Play . . . Set in a working class bar on Buffalo's East Side in the late 1950s, DROP HAMMER is a powerful blue collar play that speaks unflinchingly to issues that have plagued working people and their unions for far too long -- corruption, blacklists, red-baiting, the flight of industry to non-union areas, and much, much more. DROP HAMMER offers a vibrant look back at Buffalo's working class history with many lessons that are all too relevant to unions and working people today.
About the Author . . One of Buffalo's most renowned "subversives", Emanuel Fried was a leading labor organizer throughout the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. Defiantly facing down blacklists and corporate smear campaigns, "Manny" chronicled his experiences in an extensive body of writing that includes both novels and plays. Now 95-years-young, "Manny" is proud to see the first full production of DROP HAMMER in Buffalo -- a work he has always considered one of his very best.
Subversation Sundays . . . Throughout this production, Subversive Theatre continues its tradition of holding post-show discussions after each Sunday's performance. We call these "subversations" (subversive + conversations, get it?). For DROP HAMMER's first Subversation -- Sunday, November 16 -- we are proud to welcome Michael Hoffert, President of the AFL-CIO Buffalo Labor Council, Robert McLennen, President of the National Association of Letter Carriers, Branch 3, and Local Labor Historian Alex Blair for a panel discussion on issues in modern day union organizing.
